Introduction:

With a population of approximately 2 million people, Shiraz is the capital of the Fars province, and the fifth most populous city in Iran. The production of Shiraz pieces, however, is not limited to the city only. They are manufactured both in Shiraz, and in villages surrounding it. Shiraz carpets are usually made with wool warps and wefts. Having said that, there are also finer works that use cotton as warp and/or weft. As such, Shiraz rugs have earned quite a reputation for their durability and strength, which is exactly what makes them a very suitable candidate for covering the floor in high traffic areas.

Description:

One of the most interesting facts about Shiraz pieces, perhaps, is that they are not produced in large workshops that are professionally set up. Instead, they are hand-made by nomadic knotters on home-made fixed looms. The pile of these oriental beauties is made of very lustrous and fine wool that has been shorn from local herds of sheep, and colored mainly using natural vegetable and root dyes. The finished product then, is taken to local markets to be sold to traders who put substantial collections of these nomadic beauties together and either export them, or sell them off to larger traders.

Price Range and Value:

Shiraz carpets, in general, have a lower knot count as opposed to Qashqai or Abadeh works. As such, these tribal works come with quite thick, yet relatively lose piles. This means it is fairly easier to penetrate in Shiraz rugs' piles, which puts them in a lower tier with respect to quality compared to other Persian pieces. Their smaller carpets start from 5' in length, and 3' in width, for approximately $ 400, and they go all the way to 8' in length, and 6' in width, for approximately $ 1200.
