Sanjans are hand knotted on a vertical loom using a cotton warp and weft. The pile is usually of a medium to long length thus giving the carpet a coarse texture. The knot count is usually between 60 to 120 knots per square inch. Sanjans are often made in smaller sizes although there are some larger pieces.
Sanjan is a small town in northwest Persia that produces carpets similar to those of the Bidjar. They are usually of inferior quality, but the very finest can command exceptionally high prices. Sanjans are also sometimes referred to as Gholtgh, which are very rough and durable.
